Watch Out for Ice Dams in New Philadelphia

11/23/2023 (Permalink)

water damage in commercial building Ice dams are caused by a combination of factors.

New Philadelphia, Malvern, Pekin, and surrounding areas are prone to experiencing ice dams in the cold winter months. Ice dams are caused by a combination of factors, including snow accumulation on a sloped roof, heat loss from the interior of the building, and freezing temperatures. When heat escapes from the building, it melts the snow on the roof, which then refreezes at the eaves or overhangs where it is colder. This continuous melting and refreezing process forms ice dams. The dams prevent snowmelt from properly draining off the roof, leading to water backup, which can result in leaks, water damage, and potential structural issues if not addressed in a timely manner.

SERVPRO of New Philadelphia is available 24/7 for emergency water damage. When water damage occurs to your Wilkshire Hills, Midvale, Gilmore and surrounding areas home, we are only a phone call away. For immediate assistance call (330) 556-4656 or visit our Website to learn more.

How Can a Storm Cause a Fire in Your New Philadelphia Home?

4/29/2023 (Permalink)

dark clouds Throughout these spring months, storms are raging through the Northeast Ohio region. Storms can cause fires in several ways.

Throughout these spring months, storms are raging through the Northeast Ohio region. Along with causing water damage, storms can also start fires. Storms can cause fires in several ways. Here are a few examples:

  • Lightning strikes: Lightning strikes are a common cause of wildfires. When lightning strikes a tree or the ground, it can generate enough heat to ignite nearby vegetation. Lightning strikes can also ignite gas from decomposing plant material in bogs and marshes, leading to underground fires.
  • Strong winds: Strong winds associated with storms can spread fires that are already burning, making them harder to contain. The wind can also carry burning embers from a fire and deposit them on dry vegetation, starting new fires.
  • Downed power lines: Storms can knock down power lines, which can spark fires if the wires come into contact with dry vegetation. This is particularly dangerous in areas with high winds and low humidity, as these conditions can cause fires to spread quickly.
  • Avoid outdoor activities that could ignite a fire, making sure that campfires and other flames are fully extinguished, and avoiding the use of fireworks or other incendiary devices.
  • Additionally, if you see a fire during a storm, you should call emergency services immediately and evacuate the area if necessary.

It is important to take steps to prevent fires during stormy weather, and if you don’t, you might be bearing the consequences. If you or someone you know experience fire related storm damage, contact SERVPRO of New Philadelphia today at (330) 556-4656 for immediate assistance, or visit our website!

Recently, SERVPRO of New Philadelphia received over 400 calls from residential and commercial buildings that experienced water damage from frozen pipe breaks. Frozen pipe breaks are the leading cause of water damage in buildings during the winter season. There are ways to prevent this sort of damage. Ways to prevent your water pipes from freezing and then breaking is to make sure they are insulated well. Yes, your water pipes need insulation too. This will keep the freezing weather from getting to them and causing water damage to your home when they break. However, if your water pipes break and you don’t have the opportunity to insulate them, here is what you can do:

  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.

Common Misconceptions About Storms in Dover

12/1/2022 (Permalink)

lightning There are many misconceptions about storms including thunder, lightning, and the flooding that can occur as a result.

There are many misconceptions about storms including thunder, lightning, and the flooding that can occur as a result. Keep reading to learn the truth about some common misconceptions.

  1. “Counting the number of seconds between lightning and thunder determines the distance away from the storm.”

The idea is that every second that passes after a lightning strike indicates one mile of distance from the storm. This is a misconception, with a hint of truth to it.

According to the Cleveland Weather Examiner, it takes five seconds for thunder to travel one mile. So, if you see a flash of lightning and count ten seconds until you hear thunder, the storm is two miles away.

  1. “Lightning always goes from the ground up”

The first lightning myth most people learn is that lightning always strikes down from the clouds. After this is proved false, we usually learn that lightning is transmitted from the ground up toward the clouds. However, what is usually not explained, is that there are unseen cloud-to-ground lightning strikes that do occur prior to the visible lightning bolt. So, lightning comes from both the cloud and the ground.

  1. “You can drive a SUV or pickup truck through the flood waters if it doesn’t look too deep.”

You should never drive a vehicle through flood waters no matter how big or heavy the vehicle is, or how deep the water may look. Two feet of moving water can easily sweep a car or truck away. Flood waters can also appear shallow and end up being deeper than you think.

If you find yourself in need of help from flooding, water, or roof damage, in Dover, Uhrichsville, or Minerva, SERVPRO of New Philadelphia is available 24 hours day, 7 days a week! How to Prevent Damage from Winter Storms in New Philadelphia

11/23/2022 (Permalink)

snow truck plowing snow There are certain things you could look for after a storm to see if your home incurred any damage.

Heavy snowstorms are bound to sweep through New Philadelphia. There are certain things you could look for after a storm to see if your home incurred any damage. Here is what to expect from the first heavy snowstorm of the year.

What to Check After a Snowstorm

  • Make sure the batteries in your carbon monoxide detector are working. This is important as most homes will lose electricity during a blizzard and must burn wood or fuel inside the home to stay warm.
  • Check for broken water pipes and shut off the water supply until a professional can come and repair them.
  • Look around your home and check for any broken or shattered windows. Temporary fixes include covering them with plywood or taping blankets for insulation.
  • Listen to a radio for any roadblocks or emergency announcements.
  • If you have a chimney, make sure there is no structural damage. You don’t want to light a fire and have the smoke backing up into your home.
  • It’s important that you check for broken tree limbs as well. They could fall later and damage your yard or even cause potential injury.

A tornado is a disaster that can happen very quickly. There is little warning when a tornado is headed your way. That is why it is important to be prepared as best you can for disasters like these. CDC.gov says, “To stay safe during a tornado, prepare a plan and an emergency kit, stay aware of weather conditions during thunderstorms, know the best places to shelter both indoors and outdoors, and always protect your head.” Below are tips to help you become prepared!

Tornado Safety Tips

Tip 1: Be Prepared

  • Make sure you have a stash of fresh batteries and a battery-operated TV, radio, or internet-enabled device to listen to the latest emergency weather information. Be sure to have access to a safe shelter for your family. Gather an emergency kit and a list of important information, including telephone numbers.

How to Prepare for a Possible Winter Storm in New Philadelphia

1/22/2021 (Permalink)

A yellow Winter Storm Warning sign is standing during a storm If you home has been affected by storm damage know that SERVPRO of New Philadelphia can help.

Brrrr! It has been cold in New Philadelphia lately! But us Ohioans are used to that, right? SERVPRO of New Philadelphia wants to give our residents some helpful tips to stay safe whether you are warm and cozy at home or out and about on the road.

Driving on icy roads. If you must drive despite dangerous weather conditions, take extra caution when passing bridges or overpasses. Always slow your roll before a bridge. Hitting the brakes on a bridge could be deadly. Also ensure your tires have a thick, good tread. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends, “Tire tread depth should be a minimum of 2/32 of an inch. To check this, hold a penny between your thumb and forefinger so that Lincoln’s head is showing. Place the top of Lincoln’s head into one of the grooves of the tire’s tread. If any part of Lincoln’s head is obscured by the tread, you have a safe amount of tread, according to NHTSA. If you can see above Lincoln’s head, then you need a new tire.”

Furry Friends. Make sure your companion animals are brought indoors when the temperatures drop. Also stock up on food, waste bags, litter, paper towels, and other items you use daily. Horses and other livestock should have a shelter where they can be protected as well. Ensure grazing animals have access to food and non-frozen water.

Staying Inside. Learn how to prevent pipes in the home from freezing here. Make sure to keep the temperature in your home on a warmer setting to prepare for a potential shutoff. Keep a stockpile of canned foods, boxed cereals, granola, and protein bars on hand in the case of an emergency. Create a winter home emergency kit. You can use the supply list by the American Red Cross as a guide. This is a great checklist to use as a basis for everything you need.

After the storm. If your home is still out of power after the storm, utilize a family member or friend’s home for shelter or a local refuge for lodging with electricity. Help the elderly people in your life if they need assistance.

In addition to dangers to you and your family. Storm damage can also affect your home and your home’s belongings. Ice and other storm related conditions can wreak havoc on your roof and cause major flooding as well. If you home has been affected by storm damage know that SERVPRO of New Philadelphia can help.

Lightning Safety 101 in New Philadelphia

1/6/2021 (Permalink)

Picture is of a stick figure family with a lightning bolt coming out from the clouds. Do not go under trees for shelter. Believe it or not; there is not a single place outside that is safe, contrary to what you may have heard.

If you think you know everything when it comes to lightning safety---think again! A lot of folks think knowing what to do during a thunderstorm is second nature. But SERVPRO of New Philadelphia is here to give you some safety tips to help you make good decisions should you get caught in a thunderstorm.

Outdoor Safety

  • If you can hear it---seek shelter. This is most likely a given. But should you see lightning or hear thunder outside look immediately for shelter. Safe places include in a home, large building, or inside of a hard-topped vehicle.
  • Do not go under trees for shelter. Believe it or not; there is not a single place outside that is safe, contrary to what you may have heard. Ensuring you are inside is your best bet for safety.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes after hearing the last bit of thunder before you venture out again.
  • Stay away from windows or doors. This can be tempting if you like storm watching. But lightning can in fact come through windows. Stay back at least 30 feet. Also stay off porches and decks.
  • If a person gets struck, immediately call 9-1-1. Get medical help right away.
  • Do NOT lie on the ground. Lightning causes electric currents along the top of the ground that can be deadly over 100 feet away. There is no safe place outside, so take immediate action to get to a safer location. Avoid anything that will increase your risk of being struck by lightning such as being near or under tall trees or under pavilions.

Indoor Safety

  • Turn off all electronics. Stay off corded phones, computers and other things that put you in direct contact with electric currents.
  • Do not wash your hands, do dishes, laundry, or take a shower or bath during lightning storm. Lightning can travel through plumbing. It is best to avoid all water during a storm.
  • Do NOT lie down on or lean against any concrete floors or walls.

Should your home or business become affected by lightning or storm damage, SERVPRO of New Philadelphia can help. When you are dealing with storm, flood, and water damage, immediate action is crucial. You should choose the company with storm damage experience and expertise that has the resources and equipment to handle the job. SERVPRO can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions. Will New Philadelphia Have a White Christmas?

12/3/2020 (Permalink)

image of a snow scene with a Christmas tree lit and with presents underneath the tree AccuWeather is predicting 45 degrees and sunny for Santa Clause’s arrival day here in New Philly.

There is nothing more magical than to look out your window on Christmas morning and see a full blanket of white, glittering snow. This is not just for the kids, folks. Americans preferring a ‘White Christmas’ has been drilled into our heads since the beginning of time.

There is an actual definition for a ‘White Christmas’ and the chances of it hitting New Philadelphia this year are not in the cards. The definition from the American Meteorological Society states the main requirement is that at least an inch of snow must be on the ground at some point on December 25th.

In Ohio, the Southern half of the state has the lowest chance of a ‘White Christmas’. Northeast Ohio has the largest historical chance, and it usually hits right where you would think: the snow belt of Ashtabula and Geauga counties.

Cleveland 19 News reported: before 2017, when we received .6 inches of snow on Dec. 25, the last time it had snowed on Christmas Day was in 2003 when 2.3 inches of celestial, white wonder fell from the sky.

Even though it is still too early to tell. AccuWeather is predicting 45 degrees and sunny for Santa Clause’s arrival day here in New Philly. The probability of precipitation is only at 1%. But do not let that stop you from hoping for the “White Christmas’ 2020 so desperately needs. Keep checking this link to see if anything changes throughout the rest of December.

SERVPRO of New Philadelphia wishes you a wonderful holiday season! While snow can be beautiful---it can also cause a lot of destruction. Damage to your roof, gutters, and home is no pretty sight. Neither is a flood caused by these sometimes unknown, hidden issues.

When you are dealing with storm, flood, and water damage, immediate action is crucial. You should choose the company with storm damage experience and expertise that has the resources and equipment to handle the job. SERVPRO of New Philadelphia can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions. Should you ever need our services; we are always here. We are a 24-hour emergency service water and fire restoration company. We are here on Christmas Day whether you need us for fire damage or water damage or something in between. Fall Storm Season New Philadelphia, OH

image of an autumn day in Northern Ohio with storm cloud developing. SERVPRO of New Philadelphia can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions.

When we think of thunderstorms; we generally think severe weather comes in the Spring and Summer. However, fall is not to be counted out.

AccuWeather reports, “The second severe peak happens in the fall because you see the jet stream start to shift southward in response to the Northern Hemisphere cooling off.”

Fall storms, in Ohio, can be just as powerful too. We can see tornado warnings, high winds, and major downpours that can cause flooding.

While the most common areas for severe weather in the fall generally span from Texas to Georgia, some storms occasionally impact areas farther north, including right here in New Philadelphia.

Cincinnati.com stated that in a typical year, Ohio sees 13 tornadoes. Summer and Spring tend to see the highest number of twisters, but roughly one in five occurs in fall or winter.

Insurance Insights From an Ex Agent - Water Back-Up

10/19/2020 (Permalink)

image of standing water resting in a finished area of a residence Water does not discriminate and adding the coverage after a loss is too late and illegal at that.

I had a huge revelation about 7 years ago. I started selling insurance, and throughout that time of being an agent. I realized many coverages a homeowner or a business owner would need--- are not even on your policy to begin with. SHOCKER! Right?! These coverages are called endorsements, or riders, or add-ons. No matter the name---there are dozens you can add and if you ask me, you probably should.

One of those important coverages is water back-up. The number one reason to research this coverage is because MOST policies do not include this coverage at all! A standard water or sewer backup coverage endorsement reimburses you for water damage to the structure of your home or personal property if it is discharged or overflows from the following: a sewer or drain, a sump, sump pump, or related equipment, even if the overflow or discharge occurred because of mechanical issues.

And let me let you in on another little-known secret. Even if your insurance carrier does include water back-up---it is usually only a $5,000 limit. Guess what the average water loss is? According to Forbes magazine…it falls into the $10,000's. Time to call your agent, eh?

Another reason to add it is because it is completely affordable to do so. You will not even hardly notice a difference in your overall premium. It usually costs anywhere from $50-$250 a year to increase it to the $10,000 limit. But different limits will differ from home to home, of course. You will need to assess the amount of property in the basement or home---and go from there. Work with your agent to decide a limit that works best for you.

Water backups can happen to any home. Don’t think just because you live in a higher area, on top of a hill, in an area that has never had water issues, or have a flood policy (which is a completely different type of policy) you are fine. Water does not discriminate and adding the coverage after a loss is too late and illegal at that. So, get it on there before you have a bigger problem on your hands.

Shocking Facts About Lightning

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

When most people think of a thunderstorm, they think of tree main things: rain, thunder, and lightning.  While water and flood damage are the most common, the risks associated with lightning are also important to discuss.

All storms contain electricity, and thus the potential for lightning strikes. Lightning bolts can get as hot as 500,000 degrees and be dangerous to properties and fatal to humans. Understanding what lightning is and the damage it causes can help homeowners mitigate their risks.

Although we call it lightning, the bolts we can see are made of a quick electrical burst, either within the cloud or from the cloud to the ground.

Because the air is a poor conductor, lightning will often seek objects to strike in an attempt to create the path of least resistance to the ground. In the case of house strikes, this path is typically through piping and wiring.

There are three main dangers associated with lightning striking a home:

  1. Fire Hazards: Houses are made of materials that are easily combustible, making this one of the most common dangers from lightning strikes. Not only can the house immediately catch flame at the site of a lightning strike, but lightning traveling through wiring can damage it, causing fire hazards all throughout the electrical components of the home.
  2. Power Surges: Lightning is an electrical charge at its core and can thus transfer that charge to wiring as it travels. This can create a power surge, damaging any electronic device that is not routed through a surge protector.
  3. Shock Waves: Thunder is the most recognizable form of a shock wave, but lightning brings these dangerous currents wherever it goes. These shock waves can be deadly at close range, crumbling structures, and shattering windows.

Storm damage can come in many forms from water and wind, to lightning and fallen trees. Whatever the damage may be, SERVPRO of New Philadelphia County can handle it!
