When fall arrives, and the heating devices are turned on, it’s important to be aware of the extra precautions that should be taken to prevent fires in your New Philadelphia home. These simple tips can help prevent fires in your home.

Time change = Battery Change

When changing the clocks for Daylight Savings Time every fall and spring, make a habit of changing the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. This is also a good time to verify that all fire extinguishers are fully charged and in working order.

Central Heating System Safety

Get your central heating system cleaned, inspected, and serviced by a certified HVAC contractor every year before using it.

If you are using a gas heater, ensure that you have a sufficient quantity of fully functioning carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home.

Space Heater Safety

Make sure space heaters are surrounded by at least three feet of empty space; never place clothing or combustible items near heaters. Keep heaters away from furniture or drapery, and always turn space heaters off when you leave the house or go to bed.

Fireplace Safety

Have your chimney inspected and swept every fall to make sure that it is safe. Repair any cracks in fireplaces, and never use gasoline to start a fire in a fireplace. Use fireplace screens to keep sparks and debris inside the fireplace, and never leave a fire unattended. Keep any combustible items at least three feet away from your fireplace. For natural gas fireplaces, get all connections and lines inspected before each use.

Holiday Decoration Safety

Do not use candles in jack-o-lanterns (flashlights are best), and ensure that children’s costumes are made from fire retardant materials. Use only fire retardant holiday decorations. Verify that all holiday lights and extension cords have been properly tested and certified for safety.

Outdoor Fall Fire Safety

Clear your roof and gutters of built-up debris. Learn and comply with the outdoor burning regulations in your area. Do not illegally burn leaves or other outdoor debris.

The safety of your family and home are of utmost importance. Following basic fire prevention tips, especially in the fall and winter months, can reduce the likelihood of experiencing a fire. It’s important to review fire prevention and safety tips with your family each fall and throughout the year.
