Will Working From Home Cut It When the Pandemic is Over?

One of the biggest effects to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic is plenty of commercial business are seeing employees working from home. The question is: after the dust settles how many workplaces will maintain this lifestyle?

FORBES magazine reported that “An early-April 2020 MIT survey of 25,000 American workers found that 34% of those who’d been employed four weeks earlier said they’re currently working from home. Combined with the roughly 15% who said they’d been working from home pre-COVID-19, that means nearly half the U.S. workforce might now be remote workers. And that’s also true, the researchers say, for workers 55 and older.”

Due to unpopular belief, working from home has shown its perks. Research suggests productivity is up due to a non-distracting environment, improvement on life to work balance, and less pollution from vehicles commuting to and from.

But let us not forget that working from home is not for everyone. Especially here in New Philadelphia. If you are considered essential---there is no working in your PJ’s. Manufacturing, healthcare, emergency and police officers, and grocery store employees are just a few to name the real heroes of this pandemic. They have gotten up every day and risked their health to keep the economy, safety, and health of the community moving in a positive direction.

Now that some employers have seen it can work. Research shows this trend may continue throughout 2021. “Once businesses and individuals invest in the fixed costs of remote work,” the MIT researchers wrote in their recent report, “they may decide to stay with the new methods.” But on the other hand, with essential employees…some things will change. Do not expect to sit as close to your neighbor as you once did. And sanitization will be part of everyday life.
